Healthy Food Tips

So why healthy food? Why is eating healthy so important?

If you’re trying to watch your weight, a healthy diet is vital to help you achieve your weight goals. Even if you’re not dieting, a good diet is still important to help give you energy and make you feel your best.

The healthy food facts are that you should:

1. Eat a variety of foods from all the different food groups.

2. Make sure you get enough fibre (found in fruit, vegetables and wholegrain cereals).

3. Make sure you eat lots of fruit and vegetables.

4. Choose foods that are high in iron and calcium.

5. Consume sugary foods and alcohol only occasionally, and then in small amounts.

6. Make sure you limit fatty foods to small amounts, especially saturated fats (found in butter and some oils).

It really is easy to add healthy food to your diet. For example, you can add some sliced fruit to your breakfast cereal (bananas are great, and also strawberries). You can also make a simple smoothie by blending together banana, strawberry and skim milk. Add other fruits like peaches or apricots if you like, too.

If you usually snack on cakes and biscuits during the day, try apples or some dried fruits (like apricot) instead. You could also slice some carrot up into chip-size portions and munch on them. Carrots are actually quite sweet when they’re raw.

A really great fact about fruit and vegetables is that they’re very low in fat, or even fat free! They’re also rich in vitamins and other nutrients your body needs. Once you start getting more of these you’ll start feeling better – less tired and more energetic. If you’re eating because you always feel hungry, then give these a try.

Try to add more fibre to your diet. Fibre is important as it helps your digestive system break food down more quickly. Other than fruit and vegetables, fibre is found is a variety of foods such as potatoes, pasta, wholegrain breakfast cereals and wholemeal bread. You can also leave the skin on fruit and vegetables (like apples, pears, carrots, potatoes) rather than peeling them.

Another important aspect top eating healthy is to reduce your fat intake, particularly the ‘bad’ saturated fats. These fats have been linked to health problems such as diabetes, stroke, heart disease and obesity. Saturated fats are mainly found in takeaway/fast foods, chicken skin, butter & cream and the visible fat in red meat.

Not all fat is bad, though. Unsaturated fat, particularly monounsaturated fat, is beneficial due to its cholesterol-lowering properties. These fats can be found in most nuts, and cooking oils like olive and canola oil.

Healthy Food For Kids

I am often asked when is the right time to start cooking with children and my response is simple. Now. It is like the old saying, “When is the best time to plant a tree?, thirty years ago; when is the second best time?, now!” Similarly, it is ideal to start an interest in food and being in the kitchen when children are really young – but if you have not done that, and indeed many of us have not, now is certainly the second best time.

I am not suggesting you swing into a major campaign to make them totally competent cooks. But I am saying, if there is any glimmer of interest then encourage it. And if there is no interest, then look for ways to create it. It might be something as simple as involving them in deciding to have for dinner or asking them to stir or cut something while you fix their favorite meal. Children need to feel confident to cook in order to reach the ultimate goal of healthy food for kids, cooked by the kids.

From my perspective, as a parent I want to give my kids as many advantages in life as I can. I want my kids to be able to cook because success in any skill builds self esteem and cooking is absolutely no exception. I believe that imparting food skills also fosters personal responsibility so I feel confident that they will be better equipped to look after themselves. They need to be able to cook easy kids recipes.

Cooking is one of those essential life skills – it is like riding a bike, once they have ‘got it’ they are away. Cooking with children may better be described as ‘assembling’ – but that too requires skill. There is little point in expecting children to start from scratch when there are so many fabulous products available. Easy cooking for kids means they still need the basic food skills – how to chop an onion, bake a potato, make an omelette and so on.

An even more compelling reason is that teenagers that can cook are far more likely to make better food choices and hence healthy meals. Of course, an added bonus if your teen is able to cook a meal then you are able to get the odd night off!

My children like it when I give them some space, freedom to choose what to cook and let them go for it! I think this is good part developing independence. Although they usually like it if I am around so I can answer any questions. If you think a meal is too much, involve them to stir frying vegetables or mashing potatoes. Step one has got to be interest, before you can move on to engagement and participation.

I have found with many parents that deal-making works well. Along the lines of “If I do this for you, could you possibly make dinner”. You may be surprised to find how teenagers respond to this, many are masters of negotiation in other things so they will quickly work it out. My son used to cook a meal in return for money to go to a movie, and my daughter would cook us a fabulous meal if she wanted to borrow the car!

I laugh when my children say one of the main reasons they wanted to be able to cook was because it gave them leverage. If that is what motivates them, then that is fine. After all, I am teaching them a skill for a lifetime and they are getting what they want – a win:win for everyone.

Are You Aware of Your LDL and HDL Levels

Although there is a lot of talk about cholesterol and the need to lower it in the news today, many people are surprised to learn that there are actually two kinds of cholesterol and one of them is actually good for your body. In order to understand how to better handle your cholesterol, it’s important to understand the difference between the kind of cholesterol your body needs and the kind that puts you at risk for serious health conditions.

Cholesterol is a natural substance that is found in everyone’s bloodstream and cells. The body uses it to produce cell membranes as well as hormones in addition to performing a number of other necessary bodily functions. The problem begins when the body begins to build up too much cholesterol. This can happen in one of two ways.

First, the body naturally produces its own cholesterol in order to aid with the important body functions just mentioned. The remainder of the cholesterol comes from the foods we ingest, mainly meats, fish, eggs, butter, cheese and milk. Vegetables and plant products do not produce cholesterol. Foods that contain trans-fats and saturated fats cause the body to produce even more cholesterol.

Because cholesterol resembles a fat like substance, it can’t dissolve and must be transported from to and from the cells where it is needed by lipoproteins. Low-density lipoprotein is what is most commonly referred to as bad cholesterol. When your body contains too much LDL cholesterol, a tremendous strain is placed on your heart, making you more susceptible to heart attacks and strokes. High density lipoprotein, on the other hand, is naturally manufactured by the body and works in the body’s defense.

Do you know the warning signs for high cholesterol?

Are you aware of your LDL and HDL levels … do you even know what they mean?

If you don’t know the answers to these questions and how to lower your cholesterol, you owe it to your family and yourself to find out. If you don’t know the answers to these questions and how to lower your cholesterol, you owe it to your family and yourself to find out. Depression

Approximately 20 percent of depressed Americans, or approximately four million people, experience chronic or recurrent treatment-resistant depression that has failed to respond to multiple antidepressant treatments. ) that it had deemed its VNS Therapy System approveable as a long-term adjunctive treatment for patients over the age of 18 with chronic or recurrent treatment-resistant depression in a major depressive episode that has not responded to at least four adequate antidepressant treatments. This is an extraordinary announcement and major step for the four million Americans suffering from chronic or treatment-resistant depression towards providing an FDA-approved, informatively labeled, long-term treatment option specifically for their lifelong and life-threatening illness.

Vagus Nerve Stimulation for Chronic Treatment-Resistant Depression. On June 15th, the FDA’s Neurological Advisory Panel recommended APPROVAL of the vagus nerve stimulator as a treatment for chronic depression.

Medication

While depression can often be combated with therapy alone, some professionals do recommend medication for certain cases. Medication alone will NOT cure your depression. In some cases, medication for depression just simply does not work.

But the question more and more patients are posing to their doctors is: Is prescription medication the best treatment option. Examples of this medication type are: Fluoxetine (Prozac), fluvoxamine (Luvox), paroxetine (Paxil), escitalopram (Lexapro, Celexa), sentraline (zoloft). John Delaware is a well respected writer and recommends to learn more about treatment for depression and different types of medication for depression options.

Once you are diagnosed for your depression, you will find that the medication for depression will be helpful but not always right off the bat or with immediate gratifying results.

Health

A high-profile article in 1999, published by the Harvard University, put omega3 in the mental health limelight by offering solid proof that fish oil could significantly reduce the effects of bipolar disorders. They are known as Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) as the body is not able to synthesise them by itself and relies upon food sources and their health benefits include increased energy, protection against degenerative diseases, a strengthened immune system, and increased brain function. Consult a health care practitioner before beginning any health care program.

Emily Clark is editor at Lifestyle Health News and Medical Health News where you can find the most up-to-date advice and information on the causes of depression and many medical, health and lifestyle topics.

Yoga

In fact Yoga sages (this obviously showing my vote of Yoga for anti-depression) suggest that certain foods, which they coin as ‘rajasic’ (stimulating foods including Spices, alcohol, and animal products) foods have a negative stimulating effect on the nervous and endocrine systems, the two main ones that are related to mental health and consequently depression. I have been practicing Yoga for close to 5 years now. A rare occurrence that is; until I discovered Yoga and how it could help with depression treatment.

Before we had pharmaceutical companies offering various drugs to help us cope, our ancestors used natural methods such as plants, food, meditation, and yoga to cure their mental imbalances.

Exercise

Experience the release of endorphins through exercise (those wonderful feelings of euphoria). Read about the foods that heal your body and the ones that hurt you. Discover ways to regain your confidence. Understand how to overcome unwelcome panic attacks and regain your energy to the point where you will be embracing each day and the activities it brings. Many of them exercise regularly. However, it is important that you exercise daily to maintain your physical health and to improve attitude.

Add to those things, a good exercise program consisting of at least three “aerobic”, or concentrated sessions of exercise a week.

Anxiety

Other conditions that can be accompanied by anxiety are hypoglycemia, hyperthyroid, insomnia, premenstrual syndrome and, most often, depression. The role of GABA is the opposite, namely to slow down some nerve impulses, mainly those causing anxiety and panic response. To break up, we have around 400 million people suffering from anxiety disorders, 340 million from mood disorders, 250 million cases of personality disorders, 100 million cases of alcohol dependence and 45 million cases of schizophrenia.
